The quest to find good food in Yangon – is real! From too spicy, to too oily, to too stinky: it could sometimes feel like Myanmar food has everything but a balanced sense of taste.
In my late post on 12 Myanmar Dishes you have to try, I helped you find great local dishes you can fish out from almost any menu (and how to order it in Burmese).
In this post, I will unravel to you MY FAVORITE food places in Yangon. Restaurants and bars that are genuinely good.
Good Burmese-Food restaurants:
RANGOON TEA HOUSE
A great balance of Burmese-fusion dishes, adapted for the foreign taste buds. The English-speaking staff will easily assist you in taking out any spicy/oily/stinky elements from your dish, and effectively – allow you to enjoy local dishes at their best.
Recommended for people who want to try good Burmese food, but are afraid to have something too spicy/stinky served to them. Need to reserve a table.
BURMA BISTRO
Delicious Burmese fusion dishes. Similar to Rangoon Tea House, but much nicer interior design.
Good Western Food Restaurants:
LE BISTROT (SAVOY HOTEL)
This is the restaurant at the ground floor of Hotel Savoy. This is the place to go if you are looking for a good burger. Foreigh price - 17$ for burger, fries (and beer on Wednesdays), but delicious. If you are after a REAL burger – this would be the only place in town.
GOURMET (NOVOTEL)
On the ground floor of Novotel, you will find an upscale café-staurant called Gourmet. This posh place serves great French desserts. One of the best I’ve had in Myanmar.
CAFÉ DIBAR
A great Italian restaurant. Local prices, large veriaty of great dishes. I am never disappointed. If you love lasagna, this is the place for you!
OTHENTIC
A French restaurant by a French guy, who moved here a few years ago. He is bringing great French flavors of exquisite dishes to the Yangon food scene. If you love French crepe, this is the place for you!
SOFAER & Co.
A great restauraunt for burgers, and the best place for ice cream in Yangon. This restaurant makes their own ice cream, and the flavors are to die for! Try the Jasmin or the honey-lemongrass. Ice cream is cheap (2,500 mmk for scoop). Burgers are mid priced.
SUSHI TEI
A great sushi restaurant for sushi lovers. A large variety of dishes. Not expensive, and very high quality. A great place for sharing dishes with friends.
KRISPY KREME
If you are after amazing doughnuts, look no further. This American chain has recently opened several Krispy Kreme stores across Yangon. To die for.
INDIAN TADKA
For those who love Indian food, this restaurant (again, multiple chains across Yangon), is one of the best Indian food restaurant in Yangon. Amazing dishes, a large veriaty, and an authentic experience.
Good Bars:
This list of bars are places I enjoy going to. Each of them has a different atmosphere. Some have better cocktail, others better views, others better prices.
PENTHOUSE
Great views, great atmosphere, great cocktails. Moderately pricey.
ATLAS
Live music, good food, great atmosphere. Pricey.
YANGON YANGON
Great views, nice cocktails, party/chill atmosphere. Average price
ESPERANDO LAKEVIEW HOTEL
A hotel rooftop bar. Great views of shwedagon at dusk, good wine and cocktails. Not expensive.
LOWER 19TH STREET
bar/BBQ street market. Fun, authentic, cheap.
